Now that it sounds so easy, and it is, lets think about your local government, particularly the building department. You know, those guys that issue building permits and perform building inspections.

You may or may not be required to obtain a building permit in you town for these structures but most places I've built do. A couple of things that usually come into play are foundations, set backs from property lines and engineering of the structure. I strongly urge you to check with your building department before purchasing a kit from me or anyone else and make sure your home improvement ideas are consistent with their rules.

If you require engineering we can supply standard engineering documents for $25.00, sealed engineering for a particular state will cost $100.00 and may take a month or so to receive.

I am making a page about the basics of foundation design soon, but until then you will have to ask the advice of a local contractor or again the building department in your town.

As for the set backs, alot of places require you to supply a plot plan survey whem obtaining a permit to make additions to your home, luckly most of you already have one and it's probably filed away with the settlement papers you brought home when you bought your home. If not they are usually only a couple hundred dollars from a land surveyor. Call a few listed in your yellow pages and compare prices.
