STEP 5

Installing Gutter & Fascia

For this installation you will need to run a chalk line. First measure in from the bottom side of the roof pan back towards the beam, one inch. Do the same on the opposite end of the roof. Now chalk a line between the two marks. (Note: bottom of roof pan).

Your next step is to install gutter braces. Mark in on top of each end pan 4-1/2" and chalk a line on the top of the risers between these two marks. With the 1" x 1" x 1" x .026 gutter brace cut to 9" long, put the brace to the chalk line and screw to the top of the riser with 2, #8 x 1/2" HH screws. Gutter braces must be the same length, 9". Install the remainder of the braces, every third riser. This process will ensure that the gutter will not bow in and out due to an uneven roof.

Gutter should be boxed with full 3" box. First fold the prenotched end of the gutter 90 degrees using a pair of hand brakes it should match the profile of the fascia end. Now measure the entire length of the roof. Now with that measurement in mind, measure the gutter the same length but allow a 3" extra to fold in the other end. Now cut, notch and fold that end of the gutter. You are now ready to hang the gutter. Start by screwing the top outside lip of the gutter to the first gutter brace with one #8 x 1/2 HH screw. Repeat this with all gutter braces. Now take the 3-1/2" back side of the gutter and line it up with the original chalk line on the bottom of the roof pan. Screw through the top of the pan into the lip of the gutter you just lined up, making sure that you keep the two lined up the entire length of the roof. When screwing each pan to the gutter, sue three #8 x 1/2" HH screws per pan.

Start by screwing the top outside lip of the gutter to the first gutter brace with one #8 x 1/2" HH screw. Repeat this with all gutter braces. Now take the 3-1/2" backside of the gutter and line it up with the original chalk line on the bottom of the roof pan. Screw through the top of the pan into the lip of the gutter you just lined up making sure that you keep the two lined up the entire length of the roof. When screwing each pan to the gutter, use three #8 x 1/2 HH screws per pan.

You are now ready to install the matching fascia to the remaining sides of the carport. You need to trim the end of the fascia at an angle where butts against the house, the factory end will match the gutter profile . After you have trimed the ends of the fascia you are now ready to screw the fascia to the side of the roof pans using #8 x 1/2" HH screws. Space the screws no more than 24" apart. Make sure you have screwed the fascia to the end of the gutter so there are no gaps between the two.

STEP 6

Installing Downspout Kits

One 2" x 3" downspout is recommended for each 300 sq. ft. of roof area. Be sure to include the roof area of the home when figuring the 300 sq. ft. of roof area. You may have 300 sq. ft. of pan roof which will need one 2 x 3 downspout, plus you might have an additional 300 sq. ft. of house roof which will bring the total roof area to 600 sq. ft. which will require two 2" x 3" downspouts. The correct placement of a dropout should be centered over an end post. The long length of the dropout should run the same way as the length of the gutter. Center the dropout on the bottom of the gutter, while making sure it is centered with the post. Now pencil trace the inside opening of the dropout on the gutter. Next cut out along the trace line and push the dropout through the hole from the inside of the gutter. Next, take two #8 x 1/2" HH screws and screw up from the bottom of the gutter, through, and into the dropout.

Downspouts may have to be cut so that when installed the bottom elbow is at least 2 to 3 inches above the ground. Screw one elbow to the dropout, making sure it curves toward the 3 x 3 post. Hook a second elbow to the first elbow so that it rests against the 3 x 3 post, and faces toward the ground. The second elbow must slip over the first elbow. Now connect the downspout to the second elbow, making sure it slips over the second elbow. Connect the third elbow to the bottom of the downspout, making sure it faces away from the home and slips over the downspout. Downspout straps can now be installed over the top and bottom splice of the downspout, where the elbows are attached. As a final step, caulk the inside of the gutter where it joins the fascia and caulk around the dropout on the inside of the gutter.
